Crisis help

If you are thinking about hurting yourself, or you are worried about someone else, please reach out to a person now. You do not have to be sure it is “bad enough”.

In the United States

  • Call or text 988, or chat at 988lifeline.org. Free, confidential, 24 hours a day.
  • Immediate danger: call 911.
  • Veterans, service members and their families: dial 988 then press 1, or text 838255.
  • Crisis Text Line: text HOME to 741741.
  • LGBTQ+ young people (The Trevor Project): call 1-866-488-7386 or text START to 678-678.
  • If someone is hurting you (National Domestic Violence Hotline): 1-800-799-7233, or text START to 88788.
  • Substance use or mental health treatment referral (SAMHSA): 1-800-662-4357.

Outside the United States

Find a free helpline in your country at findahelpline.com. If you are in immediate danger, call your local emergency number.

If you are worried about someone else

Ask them directly whether they are thinking about suicide. Asking does not put the idea in their head. Stay with them, remove access to anything they could use to hurt themselves if you can do so safely, and help them call or text 988 or get to emergency care.
